This book challenged me in more ways than I can describe. For one, I was compelled by the notion that such a brutal crime could take place in such a remote, rural region of the country. Second, how to tell that story in a compassionate way, detailing how it happened, why it happened, and the circumstances surrounding how the two towns - Melvern, Kansas, and Skidmore, Missouri-dealt with the outcome. There is also a truly heroic story in the beginning of the book-that of Sheriff Ben Espey's will and determination to get the first Amber Alert issued for a newborn child. Espey's story is extraordinary in many respects. Readers will be captivated by what went on behind the scenes as the nation, essentially, searched for Victoria Jo Stinnett. There was a riff between two law enforcement agencies ... as Victoria Jo was located and found alive ... that is as suspenseful as any thriller.

Beyond that, I also had to tell Lisa Montgomery's story from birth to prison, and detail portions of her life that no one has ever heard about. There is a side of Lisa Montgomery that readers will utterly despise, setting aside for a moment the crimes she is accused of. I was allowed access into every part of her life. Her story is incredible. Through letters, personal phone calls, e-mails, family testimony and interviews with friends, neighbors and law enforcement, legal documents, I was able to crack Lisa Montgomery's life wide open! What readers find inside will astonish them. It was as if Lisa's entire life lead up to that one moment in Skidmore.

Lastly, the most compelling story I believe that comes through in the book is that of the people in both towns and how they dealt with the tragedy as it unfolded. The empathy and kindness some displayed, while withholding judgment, is a story in and of itself. I was also taken by Lisa's youngest daughter, Kayla Boman, and her remarkable story of strength when faced with a choice between her mother-locked away in prison facing a possible death sentence - and father, who was trying to rebuild his life and win back the love of his children.
